With the cost of daycare today, one parent going back to work might not be an option for you. There just isn't enough time in the day for us to be there for our children and work a job out of the home.

Start a Free Amazon Affiliate Account

Amazon has an affiliate program that will let you sign up for an account and earn a commission when someone buys something using that link. You can expect to earn up to about 8% of the cost of that item on Amazon, but that all depends on the category that item is in.

Signing up for an Amazon Affiliate account takes less than five minutes and with a little luck, you might be able to earn your first commission in a week.

To get started, log in to your Amazon account and look for a link at the bottom that says Amazon Associates. You'll be able to sign up there and get access to a special link that's unique to you.

From there, you'll take that special link and add it to the end of any normal Amazon link. Those links are long and your addition will make it even longer, but that's okay. All you'll have to do there is post that link wherever you have access to the public.

You can start off by just using your facebook. Link to something you love and find useful in your day to day life and, with any luck, someone will see that and want to buy it. Your friends won't have to pay any extra money and you'll end up earning a little bit.

Facebook is a great place to start, but you'll likely only earn a little bit of money this way. If you want to try and reach a wider audience, a great way to do that is to start a blog. And that leads us to our next tip for how to make money as a stay at home mom.

You Can Start a Blog

Starting a blog is a long-term commitment. It requires a lot of hard work and diligence, but in the end, the benefits will pay off. When you start a blog, you open up an avenue to put other money making opportunities to work.

The actual act of starting a blog isn't too difficult, and there are plenty of popular blogging platforms out there that make it as easy as possible to start one yourself. And over time, with a lot of work and patience, you can grow your blog into a brand and business that earns you money.

Freelance Writing for Blogs

Bloggers like me are always looking for new great content. It’s tough to write something new every day, so some sites invite guest bloggers to write content for their site and pay them for their efforts.

  • Startup cost? $0
  • How long it takes to earn your first dollar? You could very likely earn your first dollar this week.
  • Likelihood of earning at least some money? Very high as long as you successfully find a blog to write for.
  • asterisk
How much you can earn? Most bloggers pay between $25 and $45 per article of 2,000 words.

The good thing is you don’t have to be an expert to do this. Often the blog author will assign you a headline so you can research it online and put together an article.

As long as you can write decently well and can find the answers online, you’re perfect for this opportunity. In fact if this idea interests you, click here to learn more about how to get started as a freelance writer.

If you’re interested in writing guest posts containing quality relevant content for this site, hit me up using any contact form on the site and you could get paid to write this week.

I personally pay about $35 per article when people write guest posts for this site (+ or -). Each site you guest post for is different.

You Could Also Sell Crafts on Etsy

A lot of people post their listings on Etsy and never see a single sale from it. Often, this is because they aren't even attempting to get the word out.

Etsy is simple and inexpensive to use. All you have to do is list your item, decide how much you want to charge, and do the footwork of promoting yourself.

It's actually pretty simple to do this. One of the easiest ways is to make a few free samples and get in contact with some popular bloggers or influencers in your niche market. Tell them that you'll mail them a sample for free as long as they write an honest post about it on their blog.

Once a few blogs start to mention you, you could start making a ton of sales. This is another way for a blog of your own to help out. Your blog is the ultimate place for you to promote yourself.

As long as your product is high quality and you put in the work for promotion, you could have a nice side income through Etsy.

  1. Anyone who would try to argue that being a stay at home mom isn’t a job has never done this particular job with their actual hands on. Signing up for an Amazon Affiliate account takes less than five minutes and with a little luck, you can expand and open up a business of your own. The actual act of starting a blog isn’t too difficult, and there are plenty of popular blogging platforms but with no education on how to use them, they become pointless.

  2. You talk a lot of sense here Rich, but hey, I was a stay at home dad at one point so I’d include dads that look after their little ones also. It’s becoming more common these days.
I atually started a blog like you suggest. But instead of selling on Etsy, I use the Etsy affiliate program. This way I can send others to buy from Etsy and I make a commission. As you say though, it’s easy starting a blog, but it will take a little time and effort before money starts to flow.

  3. Good article, I like how honest you are because everything you say in your article it’s pointing towards reality, you cant expect to make a lot of money from just your own circle of friends while sharing affiliate links so here comes the part that I love you said about starting your own blog, but its just like going into a gym once you start and keep the momentum all the hard work will eventually pay off.

  4. Hi Rich,
That’s a very nicely done article.
I agree with you that Amazon’s affiliate program is a nice place to start. Sometime ago I’d thought that I had to only market my own products but I’ve come to realize that one can expand their online business by diversifying on scope of products and target markets.
I have not had much success though, and I think it’s because of inconsistencies on my part to specialize on a few products at a time. Probably you can expound on how to find the perfect products to specialize on? What would you recommend?

  6. There is some great ideas in this article. But, what about us stay at home dads and retirees? We can do these things also. I am an Amazon affiliate and they are great. I tried some surveys and they are ok but it is hard to make much money there.
Thanks for some great information and useful ideas.

  7. I am not a stay at home mom, but I have seen my mom struggle with 4 kids and still work at 2 jobs. We were lucky because we were living at my grandparents’ place for a time but we have to move out one day because they were planning on selling the house. This would definitely have been helpful for my mom at that time. It’s not too late though. I will definitely share this post with her so that she can expand on the ways that she can make money from home.

  8. I think blogging and making money as an affiliate marketer is a great way for moms and everyone To earn an extra income online.

However I would have to argue that that surveys while fun won’t yield hit a few dollars usually a month — so there not a good way to make extra money.

  9. Hey,

  10. Hallo there,

My wife gave birth to twins just a few months ago and she’s been at home taking care of them.

She has been telling me she needs something to make money with online since she was getting bored there, and I think your article will make the perfect fit for her.

I’ll get her to read it and then she can decide which way she wants to go with her passion. Thanks for this post.

  11. The options you have outlined are great. I enjoyed the portion where you suggested selling on etsy, which is a great way to showcase creativity. In the place of the women on a laptop, I would suggest including an example of a picture for an Amazon affiliate link and where it would appear for clarification.

  12. Hi there Rich,

Thank you kindly for creating and sharing this article with us all, it is absolutely appreciated.

I am absolutely fascinated by the sheer wealth of opportunities available to earn money online these days. There is an absolute abundance of manners and methods!. some, depending on their location are far better set for success than others. Take for example my girlfriend, who is just starting out online, she is Vietnamese, where the average salary is $200-$300 per month…my perspective is that it is far easier for her to replace a full time income and earn physical freedom as she only requires to earn $10 per day to be able to achieve that!
